A 1955 house in Los Angeles, reimagined by Ashley Drost and Marie Trohman of Proem Studio as something between an alpine retreat and a bohemian salon. Rather than committing to one era, the rooms borrow from many decades and fold them into a single, very personal point of view.
The architecture does the heavy lifting. Cork wraps walls and ceilings in warmth and quiet. Honey onyx glows like amber when the light hits it. Raw copper, a hand-shaped plaster fireplace and a banana-bark wallcovering with a metallic sheen give every surface a story. Nothing is flat, and nothing is generic.
Vintage pieces by Ettore Sottsass and Milo Baughman sit beside contemporary work by Faye Toogood and Material Lust. A custom console of stacked glass blocks nods to Willi Smith. In the dining room, a Martin Massé table sits beneath a Trueing chandelier of glass globes on chains, a piece the homeowner loves because it looks so soft, but it's hard.
The palette stays disciplined: honey, cork, copper and sage, with cream plaster and the odd glint of chrome. That restraint is what lets the eccentric pieces sing instead of shout. Warm natural materials soften the quirk, glass and stone bring in light, and the mix of eras makes the house feel collected over a lifetime rather than bought in a weekend.
